Saber nomear os membros da família é essencial para se apresentar e falar sobre sua vida. Em inglês, os termos de parentesco são bem diretos e muitas vezes mais simples que em português.

"Cousin" não tem gênero!
Em inglês, cousin serve tanto para primo quanto prima. O contexto ou pronome deixa claro:
My cousin he is tall. (primo) · My cousin she is tall. (prima)
O mesmo vale para sibling (irmão ou irmã, sem distinção de gênero).

Mom/Dad vs Mother/Father
Mom e Dad são informais — usados no dia a dia e ao falar diretamente.
Mother e Father são formais — usados em textos, documentos e apresentações.
Nas duas formas, o M e o D são maiúsculos quando substituem nomes próprios: "I love Mom."
Erros comuns com termos de família
My parents is teachers. → ✅ My parents are teachers.
I have a cousin girl. → ✅ I have a female cousin. / My cousin is a girl.
She is my woman. → ✅ She is my wife. (wife = esposa, não "woman")

10 termos essenciais: mother, father, parents, sister, brother, siblings, son, daughter, husband, wife.

Família estendida

grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle, cousin, niece, nephew, grandson, granddaughter.

Estado civil

single, married, divorced, widowed, engaged, boyfriend, girlfriend, partner.

Mom/Dad vs Mother/Father

"Mom" e "Dad" são informais e carinhosos. "Mother" e "Father" são formais.

⚠ Erros comuns com família

❌ "My parents is" → ✅ "My parents are" · ❌ "She is my woman" → ✅ "She is my wife"

Perguntas frequentes

Parentes por casamento usam "in-law": brother-in-law (cunhado), sister-in-law (cunhada), father-in-law (sogro), mother-in-law (sogra). Para o filho do cônjuge de um relacionamento anterior: stepson/stepdaughter. Pai/mãe adotivo: adoptive father/mother.
As perguntas mais comuns: "Do you have siblings?" (Você tem irmãos?), "Are you married?" (Você é casado?), "Do you have kids?" (Você tem filhos?), "How big is your family?" (Sua família é grande?), "Where do your parents live?" (Onde seus pais moram?).
"Grandma" ou "grandma" para avó, "grandpa" para avô. Nos EUA também se usa "nana" e "pops" carinhosamente. Para ambos juntos: "grandparents". É muito comum nos EUA crianças chamarem os avós de "grandma Sue" e "grandpa Tom".
